The Choquequirao Trek 4 Days is one of the most rewarding hiking adventures in Peru, offering travelers exclusive access to the remote Choquequirao archaeological site, also known as the “sister city of Machu Picchu.” This challenging yet unforgettable trek can only be reached on foot, making it a perfect experience for adventure lovers seeking an off the beaten path destination.
Recently, Choquequirao ranked first on Lonely Planet is Best in Travel list in the “Regions” category one of the most prestigious recognitions in global travel. International experts highlight it as a top destination for explorers and hikers looking for untouched landscapes and authentic Andean culture.
Lonely Planet invites travelers to imagine Choquequirao in Peru as a place where you can reconnect with nature and history. At the Inca citadel, you can sit quietly and admire the breathtaking mountain scenery, observe the winding Apurímac River from above, and even watch majestic Andean condors soaring through the sky.
If you seek a challenging hike combined with history, nature, and solitude, the 4 day Choquequirao Trek offers an unparalleled trekking experience in the Andes.
We pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 4:00 a.m. and travel approximately 4 hours by private vehicle to the trailhead at Capuliyoc (2,800 m / 9,186 ft). Here, we enjoy a hearty breakfast and meet our trekking team, including muleteers and pack horses.
After breakfast, we begin the trek with a short 20-minute walk to the Capuliyoc viewpoint, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Vilcabamba Mountain Range, the snow-capped Padreyoc Peak, and the immense Apurímac Canyon.
We then descend for 3 hours through stunning Andean terrain, rich in native medicinal plants such as muña and chilca, once used by the Incas. With luck, you may spot the majestic Andean condor soaring overhead.
Continuing downhill, we reach Chiquisca (1,800 m / 5,905 ft), where a traditional buffet lunch awaits. After a short rest, we descend another 45 minutes to Rosalinas Beach (1,700 m / 5,577 ft), located on the banks of the Apurímac River—the natural border between the Cusco and Apurímac regions.
Crossing the river, we begin the most challenging section of the day: a 4-hour uphill climb to Marampata (3,500 m / 11,483 ft). Along the trail, you’ll encounter local Andean families, terraced farming fields, and spectacular cliffside views.
We arrive at our private Choquequirao Sanctuary Lodge around 5:30 p.m. Dinner is served at 7:00 p.m., followed by stargazing under clear Andean skies, where Inca constellations are often visible.
We begin the day early with warm coca tea, followed by breakfast at 7:30 a.m. From Marampata, we hike toward the Choquequirao Archaeological Complex, enjoying dramatic canyon views along the route.
Upon arrival, your guide leads a 3-hour guided tour of this vast Inca city, known as the “Cradle of Gold.” You will explore:
The Main Plaza
Agricultural terraces
The iconic Llama Terraces
Ceremonial and astronomical sectors
Lesser-known hidden areas of the complex
Unlike Machu Picchu, Choquequirao remains largely unexplored, with only about 30% excavated, making the visit truly special.
After the tour, we descend to the Choquequirao campsite for a picnic lunch. In the afternoon, we visit a hidden natural treasure known only to local guides—the Pachayoc Waterfalls, an incredible viewpoint perfect for photography and relaxation.
We return to Marampata Lodge for dinner and a restful night.
After breakfast at 6:00 a.m., we begin our descent toward Rosalinas Beach, a downhill hike of 3–3.5 hours. After crossing the Apurímac River once again, we continue to Chiquisca, where a freshly prepared lunch awaits.
This region is famous for condor sightings, so keep your camera ready. The afternoon is spent relaxing at camp with tea time, followed by dinner and rest.
After an early breakfast, we tackle the final challenge of the trek—a 4-hour uphill hike back to Capuliyoc. Upon arrival, we celebrate the completion of the trek with a farewell lunch alongside the trekking team.
After saying goodbye to your guide, cook, and muleteers, we return to Cusco by private transport (approx. 4 hours), passing scenic Andean valleys along the way.
Optional: Visit the Conoc Hot Springs, a perfect way to relax tired muscles after four days of adventure.
Arrival in Cusco is in the late afternoon, with drop-off at your hotel.
