Day 1Cusco – Cusipata – Pitumarca – Rainbow Mountain - Ananta Pata - Ausangate Cocha - Camp

The Ausangate 7 Lakes to Rainbow Mountain Trek begins early in the morning with a hotel pickup at 4:00 AM in Cusco. From Cusco, we begin a scenic drive through the breathtaking landscapes of the southern Andes, passing traditional villages, highland valleys, and herds of alpacas grazing across the vast puna grasslands.

After several hours of travel, we arrive at the small Andean village of Pacchanta, located at approximately 4,200 meters (13,780 ft) above sea level. This remote mountain community is the main starting point for the Ausangate trekking routes.Pacchanta is well known for its natural hot springs and spectacular views of the sacred Ausangate, the highest peak in the Cusco region. For the local Quechua communities, Ausangate is considered an Apu, or sacred mountain spirit, believed to protect the surrounding valleys and villages.

Upon arrival in Pacchanta, we enjoy a nutritious breakfast prepared by our trekking team while admiring the impressive glaciers of Ausangate. After breakfast, the trekking adventure officially begins as we hike toward the famous Seven Lakes of Ausangate, one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in southern Peru.The trail gradually ascends through stunning high-Andean terrain, offering incredible views of glaciers, snow-capped mountains, and vast alpine valleys. Along the route, trekkers will visit several beautiful glacial lakes formed by the melting ice of Ausangate.

Day 2Ausangate Cocha – Palomani Pass –Huchuy Phinaya- Sorapata Camp

After breakfast at the campsite near the slopes of Ausangate, trekkers begin a gradual but steady ascent toward Arapa Pass, a spectacular high mountain pass that forms part of the classic Ausangate trekking circuit.

The trail climbs slowly through open high Andean valleys, where the landscape is dominated by rolling grasslands, herds of alpacas, and snow-covered peaks. Along the way, hikers may encounter local Andean shepherds dressed in traditional clothing while guiding their llamas and alpacas across the vast puna grasslands.

Reaching Arapa Pass is one of the highlights of the day. From this panoramic viewpoint, trekkers can admire breathtaking views of massive glaciers, dramatic mountain ridges, and remote alpine lakes scattered across the rugged terrain. The trail climbs steadily across the vast high Andean puna landscape, surrounded by rolling hills, colorful mineral mountains, and herds of alpacas and llamas grazing peacefully across the plateau. As the altitude increases, trekkers are rewarded with increasingly dramatic views of the remote Andes of southern Peru, a region known for its pristine wilderness and breathtaking scenery.

Reaching Warmisaya Pass at nearly 5,000 meters above sea level is a major highlight of the day. From this spectacular viewpoint, trekkers are rewarded with one of the first panoramic views of Rainbow Mountain, whose vibrant mineral layers stand out against the surrounding peaks. The pass also offers incredible vistas of glaciers, jagged ridges, and colorful valleys that define the rugged beauty of the Ausangate trekking region.

This area is geologically fascinating, as the mountains display intense natural colors formed by sedimentary mineral deposits such as iron oxide, copper, and sulfur. Day 4Pacchanta – Tinki – Return to Cusco

The trail gradually ascends from the campsite in Surine Valley, crossing wide high altitude plains and colorful mountain slopes as the first light of day illuminates the surrounding peaks. As the sun rises over the Andes, the mineral rich mountains begin to glow with vibrant shades of red, orange, gold, and green, creating an unforgettable trekking experience.

After approximately one to two hours of hiking, trekkers reach the famous Rainbow Mountain viewpoint, located at more than 5,000 meters above sea level. Known locally as Vinicunca or the Mountain of Seven Colors, this natural wonder has become one of the most visited trekking destinations near Cusco.

The mountain’s incredible colors are the result of millions of years of geological activity and mineral sedimentation, including iron oxide, copper sulfate, and other natural minerals that formed the mountain’s striking stripes of red, yellow, turquoise, and green.

Packing List

A light day pack with a change of clothes for the whole period of the trek – prepare for a vast range of changes in temperature
Rain gear (jacket and pants if available) or rain poncho. Plastic ponchos can be bought for about $1 in Cusco
Strong footwear, waterproof trekking boots recommended. Extra socks are a must.
Sandals or plastic slip on thongs are also good to give your feet a chance to breath in the evenings if you wish to carry them.
Warm clothes, including jacket, fleeces, gloves, scarf and beanie/touk. Thermal clothing is also recommended, especially for sleeping. * This is a particularly cold trek, you should make sure you have a lot of very warm clothes.
