If you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure without the commitment of a full four day trek, the 2 Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is just what you need. This shorter route offers a perfect blend of excitement, history, and nature as it meanders through the breathtaking landscapes of the Peruvian cloud forest, showcasing vibrant vegetation, stunning views, and well-preserved ancient Inca paths.
On this quick hike to Machu Picchu, you’ll be walking the sacred trails once traveled by Inca pilgrims, stepping along original stone pathways and exploring significant archaeological sites like Wiñay Wayna, one of the most remarkable Inca complexes on the trail. As you journey, you’ll be treated to spectacular vistas of the Vilcanota Valley while diving into the fascinating world of Andean cosmology and the rich legacy of the Inca Empire.
The tour’s highlight is when you reach Inti Punku, or the Sun Gate, the historic viewpoint where the Incas first laid eyes on the Lost City of Machu Picchu. From this stunning vantage point, you’ll be greeted with an unforgettable panorama before making your way down to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site with a knowledgeable guide who will unveil its secrets and significance.
After your guided exploration of Machu Picchu, you’ll head down to Aguas Calientes, where you can unwind before catching a comfortable train back to Cusco. The 2 Day Inca Trail is perfect for those seeking a brief, scenic, and culturally rich experience, providing direct access to Machu Picchu while still allowing you to enjoy the iconic highlights of the classic Inca Trail.
Your Short Inca Trail adventure begins early with a 3:00 am pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. We drive for two hours through the beautiful Sacred Valley of the Incas until reaching the Ollantaytambo train station. From here, we board the train toward KM 104, the official starting point of the 2-Day Inca Trail.
After passing the checkpoint with your original passport and trail permits, we begin a steady 3-hour ascent. Along the trail, you’ll enjoy classic Andean landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, and spectacular mountain views. Our first major stop is the impressive archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna, where your guide will explain its significance during the Inca period. We enjoy lunch here before continuing the final 2-hour hike.
In the afternoon, we arrive at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), the iconic viewpoint offering your first breathtaking panorama of Machu Picchu. After taking photos and enjoying the view, we descend to the Machu Picchu checkpoint and take the bus to Aguas Calientes, where we spend the night.
Today is the highlight of your 2-Day Inca Trail, as you will experience Machu Picchu at sunrise. After breakfast, we take one of the first buses at 5:30 am to arrive at the citadel by 6:00 am.
Enjoy a 2-hour guided tour exploring the most important sectors of Machu Picchu, including the Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Three Windows, Intihuatana, Temple of the Condor, and other remarkable Inca constructions. After the tour, you will have free time to explore on your own or return to Aguas Calientes (lunch not included).
