The Inca Trail and Rainbow Mountain 3 Day Tour is a fantastic way to experience two of Peru’s most iconic attractions: the Short Inca Trail leading to Machu Picchu and the stunning Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca. This journey takes you through the lush landscapes of the Peruvian cloud forest, ancient Inca ruins, and the breathtaking Vilcanota Valley. On the first couple of days, you’ll hike along the historic path once traveled by Inca pilgrims, exploring remarkable sites like Wiñay Wayna and the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), all while soaking in your first stunning views of Machu Picchu. After you’ve marveled at this world-renowned wonder, you’ll hop on a train back to Cusco.
The final day is all about the Rainbow Mountain full-day hike, which is one of Cusco’s must-see natural wonders. Locally known as Vinicunca, this vibrant Andean mountain showcases striking mineral stripes and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. Throughout the hike, a knowledgeable native guide who speaks English, Spanish, and Quechua will share insights into the geological and cultural significance of this natural gem. If you’re feeling the effects of the altitude or just want a more leisurely experience, there’s an optional horseback riding service available for part of the route.
This 3-day adventure in Peru is perfect for those looking to blend Inca Trail hiking, exploring Machu Picchu, and soaking in the beauty of the Andes. It’s an ideal choice for travelers with limited time, providing a unique chance to immerse yourself in Peru’s rich culture, ancient history, and stunning landscapes, from the legendary Inca ruins to the vibrant slopes of Rainbow Mountain.
Your Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu adventure begins early with a 3:00 am hotel pick-up in Cusco. We travel for two hours through the breathtaking Sacred Valley of the Incas to reach the Ollantaytambo train station. After a scenic 1 hour and 20-minute train ride, we arrive at KM 104, the official starting point of the 2-Day Inca Trail hike.
After passing the checkpoint with your original passport and Inca Trail permits, we begin a gradual 3-hour uphill hike along well-preserved original Inca stone paths. Along the way, you’ll enjoy classic Andean mountain landscapes, rich cloud forest vegetation, diverse flora and fauna, and stunning panoramic views.
Our first major highlight is the impressive Wiñay Wayna archaeological site, one of the most important ruins on the Inca Trail. Here, your professional Inca Trail guide will explain its historical and cultural significance. After enjoying lunch, we continue hiking for approximately 2 more hours toward the iconic Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where you’ll experience your first unforgettable panoramic view of Machu Picchu.
From the Sun Gate, we descend to the Machu Picchu citadel checkpoint and take the bus down to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), where you will spend the night and prepare for your guided visit to Machu Picchu the following day.
We start early to experience Machu Picchu at sunrise, one of the most memorable moments of the 2-Day Inca Trail tour. After breakfast, we take one of the first Machu Picchu shuttle buses at 5:30 am, arriving at the citadel around 6:00 am, when the site is quiet and the morning light reveals its full beauty.
Your professional Machu Picchu guide will lead a comprehensive 2-hour guided tour, exploring the most important temples and sectors of the ancient Inca city. Highlights include the Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Three Windows, Intihuatana stone, Temple of the Condor, and other remarkable Inca archaeological structures, while learning about the history, engineering, and spiritual significance of Machu Picchu.
After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore Machu Picchu on your own, take photos, or return to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) for lunch (not included).
In the afternoon, we board the scenic train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, traveling through the beautiful Sacred Valley. Upon arrival, our private transportation will be waiting to transfer you back to Cusco, with an estimated arrival time of around 8:00 pm, marking the end of your unforgettable Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu experience.
Your Rainbow Mountain tour from Cusco begins early with a 4:00 am hotel pick-up for a scenic 1.5-hour drive to Cusipata, where we enjoy a hearty Andean breakfast. After breakfast, we continue driving for another 1.5 hours to Chillihuani, the starting point of the Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) hike.
The hike to Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, passing through high-altitude landscapes dotted with alpaca and llama herds, snow-capped peaks, and breathtaking Andean mountain scenery. Along the way, you’ll experience the unique ecosystem of the Peruvian Andes.
At the summit of Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca (5,000 m / 16,404 ft), your professional guide will explain the fascinating geological formation of the Seven-Color Mountain, shaped by mineral-rich sediments over millions of years. You’ll have plenty of time to take photos, enjoy panoramic views, and practice quiet meditation at high altitude.
Afterward, we descend for approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes back to Chillihuani and return to Cusipata for a well-deserved lunch. In the afternoon, we drive back to Cusco, arriving at around 4:00 pm, concluding an unforgettable Rainbow Mountain day tour from Cusco.
