Itinerary Ausangate Trek To Rainbow Mountain 2 Days

Day 1Cusco – Queshuno – Pucaccocha Pass-Ananta pata-surine qocha- lake

We pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 4:00 am and drive approximately 3.00 hours to Queshuno,the starting point of the day is hike.

While we make our final preparations before we get on our way, our chef will prepare the delicious and nutritious breakfast that’ll give you all the energy you need to face the challenge that lies ahead. Before starting the tour, you’ll need to pay close attention to your guide, who’ll share with you all the details of today’s itinerary, as well as safety tips that’ll come in handy the next two days.

We’ll start this impressive and Little known walk through a green valley from where you can appreciate the majestic Ausangate glacier in the distance the highest peak in all the Cusco region. Along the way, you’ll observe several peasant communities and discover the deep connection with nature that characterizes the Andean culture. Hundreds of alpacas and llamas will watch you every step of the way!

We’ll continue our journey to the first pass known as Pucacocha pass (4,870 m / 15,978 ft). From there, you’ll enjoy a truly stunning panorama where you’ll spot the crystal clear waters of the pucacocha Lagoon and the gigantic Ausangate glacier right in front of you you are bound to be impressed! You’ll see how the waters of the lagoon originate from the snow of this sacred glacier. This spectacle is true to awaken your senses, and you’ll feel profound energy deep inside. Don’t forget to charge your camera! There are many spectacular photo opportunities along the way.

After a short break, we’ll keep hiking for another hour and a half downhill to Anantapata, where we’ll stop for lunch. Once we’ve regathered our energy, we’ll ascend for two more hours until we reach the highest point of the day’s route called Warmisaya Pass (4,985 m / 16,354 ft). From there, you’ll get to see, for the first time and in the distance, the spectacular colors and dreamlike image of Rainbow Mountain known as Vinicunca.

We’ll descend for a final 45 minutes until we reach our camp located next to the Surine Qocha Lake. Upon your arrival, we’ll welcome you with our happy hour of snacks and hot drinks to curb your hunger. Later, you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner before a well deserved night of rest.

Day 2Ananta or surine qocha– Rainbow Mountain – Red Valley – Cusco

Today is the highlight of the Rainbow Mountain trek. We wake up at 4:45 am with a warm cup of coca tea, followed by a nutritious breakfast. We then begin our ascent to Ananta Pass at 5,150 m / 16,896 ft, the highest point of the trek. From the pass, we descend toward Circle Lake, surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.

Continuing along the trail, we pass two additional alpine lakes before arriving at Vinicunca, also known as Rainbow Mountain, one of Peru’s most iconic natural attractions. Take time to explore, admire the vibrant mineral colors, and capture unforgettable photos of this world-famous destination.

Next, we hike for about 30 minutes to visit the impressive Red Valley, known for its striking red landscapes and panoramic Andean views. After enjoying this unique area, we descend for approximately 2 hours to our final lunch spot.

In the afternoon, we board our private transport for the 3.5-hour return drive to Cusco, arriving at approximately 6:00 pm.

Packing List

A light day pack with a change of clothes for the whole period of the trek – prepare for a vast range of changes in temperature
Rain gear (jacket and pants if available) or rain poncho. Plastic ponchos can be bought for about $1 in Cusco
Strong footwear, waterproof trekking boots recommended. Extra socks are a must.
Sandals or plastic slip on thongs are also good to give your feet a chance to breath in the evenings if you wish to carry them.
Warm clothes, including jacket, fleeces, gloves, scarf and beanie/touk. Thermal clothing is also recommended, especially for sleeping. * This is a particularly cold trek, you should make sure you have a lot of very warm clothes.
